Pasargadae (which I can never spell the same way twice in the same sentence but will endeavor to do so for the space of this blog entry) was the ancient capital city of the Achaemenid Dynasty of the Persian Empire. Pasargadae was built in the 6th century BC by Cyrus II (also known as Cyrus the Great, who ruled 550-530 BC).

The site has two palaces built during the Achaemenid period, and the startlingly intact tomb of Cyrus, which was under conservation in 2002 when this picture was taken by Shirley Schermer.
