    Kennewick Man: An Introduction

In 1996, two men watching a speed boat contest on the Columbia River in Washington found a human skeleton, the Kennewick Man. The skeleton was dated to approximately 9000 years ago, but did not appear to be what the public generally thinks of as Native American. The resulting discussion and legal battles over control of the remains created what is one of the most important issues of modern archaeology.

The Kennewick Man case of Washington state is but the tip of the ice berg for the New World Entrada controversy. This nine part mini-course on Kennewick Man discusses who the Kennewick Man was, what the controversy is about, what 'race' means, what the court battle was about, what the court decided, and finally, what the scientists have learned about the skeleton so far.
