How to Keep From Getting Lost in the Field
From your Archaeology Guide
The vegetation in rural farmfields can be very high indeed, and it is easy to get lost; here's how to avoid it
Difficulty Level:
Average
Time Required:
30 minutes
Here's How:
- Get maps of the area involved--topographic, street maps, soil maps, whatever you can find.
- Bring a compass--wear it around your neck is best.
- Bring a loud whistle as well. Yelling won't be heard, but a whistle might
- Pay attention to landmarks as you drive or walk around.
- If you are on foot, keep track of the number of paces you head in which direction.
- Watch for farmhouses (but be aware of farm dogs)
- Keep an eye out for directional indicators, such as fence and property lines and roads, which generally run north/south or east/west.
- If you're lost near a stream, head downstream.
Tips:
- The best tip is to pay attention! No daydreaming allowed, particularly if the crops are too high to see over.
- Cell phones and two-way radios will inform your friends that you are among the living, but not your location
