How to Lay Out a Meter Square Unit
From your Archaeology Guide
Laying out a square test unit is one of the skills you will have to pick up as you go into archaeology.
Difficulty Level:
Average
Time Required:
10 minutes
Here's How:
- Gather materials: four chaining pins, one ball of string, two three-meter tapes, one compass, two assistants
- Using the commpass, lay out a straight north/south line measuring one meter.
- Place a chaining pin at either end of this line.
- Have one assistant sit at the north chaining pin, holding the end of one of the three meter tapes.
- Have the second assistant sit at the south chaining pin, holding the end of the other three meter tape.
- Measure out eastward from the north end a distance of 1.41 m (the square root of 2)
- Measure out eastward from the south end a distance of 1.0 m
- Cross the two meter tapes, such that 1.41 matches 1.0 on the inside of the two tapes.
- Place the chaining pin where the two meter tapes cross, this will be the southeast pin of the square.
- Repeat steps 6 through 8, measuring out 1.0 from the north, and 1.41 from the south.
- Place the chaining pin as above, making the northeast pin of the square.
- Remeasure each of the sides, which should be 1.0 m in length.
