The Architect of Arch-L

The Next Project

If you had all the time in the world, what would be your next project?

Good question, I have books I'd like to write, courses I'd like to teach, research projects I'd like to start, but I'll limit my answer to the Internet and web projects. I'm interested in small projects that will help to communicate to the public what archaeology is about. Our discipline does not have a Carl Sagan figure, someone who is well recognized by the public for his or her ability to communicate the passion science has for its research. The recent press conferences for the Mars Pathfinder project also communicated that passion to the public at large, although the passion often seems to be focused on a graph of subtle pressure changes in the Martian atmosphere. Because the web effectively eliminates the cost of images and color, it is a great way to talk about archaeology. We just haven't found the best way to do it yet.

One thing I'd like to emulate from astronomy is their "picture of the day" web site. An "Archaeology Picture of the Day" would illustrate an artifact, monument, site, or archaeologists and would provide a one paragraph summary. I wouldn't want to start it without lots of help and 3-6 months of material in hand.
