John Aubrey [1626-1697]

Definition: British adventurer and scientist, John Aubrey wrote Monumenta Britannica, published in 1674, which described Stonehenge and Avebury in some detail; he believed that Stonehenge had been built by Druids, an idea no longer believed (the site is much older than the Druid occupation).
