Oscar Montelius [1843-1921]

By K. Kris Hirst, About.com

Definition: Oscar Montelius was a Swedish antiquarian, whose primary contribution to the study of archaeology was the development of a typology for stone age period artifacts. He believed that it was likely that similarly shaped items came from similar periods in time. Turns out he was right, more or less. His book describing this methodology (Die Methode), has recently been placed online, in German.
