By , About.com Guide

Definition: The career of pioneer American anthropologist Lewis Henry Morgan had of tremendous impact on the beginning studies of archaeology in the Americas. His most important studies were in kinship, that is, describing how different cultures defined their closest relatives and lines of descent. He was also important in the development of the concept of cultural evolution, which describes civilization as the final and logical conclusion of all savage societies. Oh well. Somebody had to do it.
