Definition: French geologist Gabriel de Mortillet was one of several researchers at the cutting edge of the field of prehistory about the time of Darwin's Origin of the Species. In the 1860s and 1870s, de Mortillet worked with Swiss geologist Eduard Desor at Lake Varese, one of the alpine Neolithic lake dwellings. He is probably best known for his work ordering Stone Age cultural artifacts, based on a linear concept of increasing sophistication and development of society.
