In a couple of articles in American Antiquity, archaeologist Barbara Bocek ran an experiment at the Jasper Ridge site in central California. She completely excavated a 1x2 meter unit and backfilled it with clean sifted sediment. Then she went back seven years later and re-excavated the pit, discovering that prairie dogs had moved into the unit, bringing artifacts from the adjacent areas with them.
