<Back to Last Page>     <Full Glossary>

Definition: The French archaeologist Abbé Breuil was known as "the Pope of Prehistory." Although his priesthood was largely ceremonial, he conducted archaeological research in the Dordogne Valley of France, and he was a very respected specialist in Paleolithic art during his lifetime. He is best known for proving that the Aurignacian period predated the Solutrean.
