<Back to Last Page>     <Full Glossary>

Definition: British naturalist, Charles Darwin's theory of evolution was one of the greatest contributions to science yet known. A cautious man, Darwin wrote his The Origin of Species in the 1840s, but was unwilling to publish such a revolutionary text until Alfred Russel Wallace sent him a copy of his ideas along the similar line. Wallace and Darwin both published papers on the theory of evolution in 1858.
