Definition: American paleontologist Stephen Jay Gould was a phenomenal force for the popularization of hard science. He was a student of German paleontologist Ernst Mayr and a passionate defender of evolution. More importantly, Gould was able to put some of the most difficult concepts in paleontology into plain English, making the science accessible to pretty much any English-speaker with an interest. Because of this ability, not to mention his prolific practice of it, I believe Gould was one of the most influential scientists of the 20th century.
