Iroquois Confederacy
<Back to Last Page>     <Full Glossary>

Definition: Said to be one of the world's oldest democracies, the Iroquois Confederacy refers to the political alliance between five Iroquois-speaking of the northeastern United States, including Onondaga, Cayuga, Seneca, Mohawk, Oneida, and in 1722, the Tuscarora. The confederacy is interesting from an archaeological standpoint because comparison of the remains of the different villages indicates how the influence of political and social contacts affect human material culture over time.

Also Known As: Haudenosaunee Confederacy
