Definition: Early state society in Korea, marked by keyhole-shaped mounded tombs called "kofun." While kofun are considered to have appeared first in China during the first millennium BC, they appear to be associated with burials of elite personages of the Kofun state in Japan during the 3rd and 7th centuries AD. This cultural period follows the Yayoi. Called Koguryo state in Korea.
