Definition:
Known primarily as the excavator of Babylon, German archaeologist Robert Koldewey also excavated in Asia Minor, Greece, and Italy. Koldewey's excavations at Babylon revealed the foundations of the ziggurat Marduk, and the Ishtar Gate; and in the process he developed several modern techniques including a method to identify mud brick architecture.
