Definition: British archaeologist R.A.S. Macalister spent much of his career excavating in Syro-Palestine sites such as Tell el-Jazari, the biblical city of Gezer; but also spent 35 years in Ireland, conducting local research as well. He is best known, probably, for developing advanced stratigraphic excavation techniques with fellow archaeologist Frederick Jones Bliss.
