Maiden Castle

Definition:
An Iron Age hill fort in Dorset, England, Maiden Castle encompasses about 45 acres in area. The site was first occupied during the Neolithic (ca. 3000 BC), and was more or less continuously occupied through Roman times, although the site included a large community between 350 and 70 BC. It was conquered in AD 43 by the Roman emperor Vespasian. Primary excavators include Mortimer Wheeler and Niall Sharples.
