18th century Englishman Thomas Malthus, while not by any stretch of the imagination an archaeologist, nevertheless affected and still affects archaeological theory, in that he argued that left to its own devices, human populations will always exceed their ability to produce food, a theory known today as as Malthusian, in his honor. One of Darwin's acknowledged influences.
