Mari

Definition: Early dynastic period (3000-2334 BC) state (and the site) in what is now Syria, burned to the ground by the Babylonian king Hammurabi in 1757 BC. The Mari state was an important trade center between Mesopotamia and the Mediterranean Sea. The site of Tell Hariri includes an enormous palace belonging to the last of the Mari kings, Zimri Lim, 100 meters on a side. Primary excavations there have been conducted by André Parrot and Jean-Claude Marguernon.
