Mixtec usually refers to the Late Post Classic period culture based in the mountains and coastal regions of the modern state of Oaxaca in Mexico, dated between about 1200 AD-1521 AD; but it also a confusing array of other things, including a language, the area in southwestern Mexico, and a pottery style. At the time of the Spanish conquest, Mixteca kings ruled Monte Alban. Mixtec peoples during the Late Postclassic period produced several written illustrated manuscripts (codices) of their history, delicate jewelry, and polychrome pottery.
