How to deal with a cold climate in the field

As an archaeologist, you'll be spending eight or more hours a day in the wind and cold! Be prepared!

Difficulty Level: Easy      Time Required: 30 minutes

Here's How:

  1. Wear proper clothing: long underwear is a must, and lots of layers works best.
  2. A hat is absolutely vital; a warm ski cap works best.
  3. Cover your face up; use a scarf or face mask.
  4. Wear gloves; glove liners inside your work gloves work well.
  5. Be sure to move around a lot; flap your arms and stomp your feet to keep the feeling in.
  6. Take warming breaks at regular intervals
  7. Try to take a lunch break inside out of the wind.
  8. Don't get wet! and if you do, get inside immediately and dry out your clothing.

Tips:

  1. Some supervisors are impervious to the cold or any bad weather; you must stand up for yourselves if the weather is really nasty.
  2. Fluids are still necessary, if you are working all day. Drink hot coffee or hot chocolate; never alcohol.
