How to dress for the field

Every new field technician wants to know how to dress for success

Difficulty Level: Easy      Time Required: 30 minutes

Here's How:

  1. First and foremost: good boots. Hiking boots for survey, flat-soled boots or sneakers for excavation, rubber boots for mud. Break them in first!
  2. A hat with a brim. Hat style depends on where in the world the excavation is.
  3. T-shirts with non-obscene slogans are fine; plain are better.
  4. Flannel shirts with long sleeves
  5. Two or three pairs of sturdy denims, with back pockets
  6. Sun block--at least SPF 30, and lots of it.
  7. Calamine lotion or similar stuff for dealing with the inevitable poison ivy (check local vegetation)
  8. Work gloves, several pair, sturdy.
  9. Socks, many many pairs of socks, thick and thin and cotton and nylon.

Tips:

  1. You will be sunburned, count on it, so bring antidotes
  2. Count on the majority of your clothes being destroyed over the course of the season--spend money only on good boots.
