How to keep from getting lost in the field

Wandering around in the countryside is something that archaeologists do on a regular basis; this will help.

Difficulty Level: Average      Time Required: 30 minutes

Here's How:

  1. Get maps of the area involved--topographic, street maps, soil maps, whatever you can find.
  2. Bring a compass--wear it around your neck is best.
  3. Bring a loud whistle as well. Yelling won't be heard, but a whistle might
  4. Pay attention to landmarks as you drive or walk around.
  5. If you are on foot, keep track of the number of paces you head in which direction.
  6. Watch for farmhouses (but be aware of farm dogs)
  7. Keep an eye out for directional indicators, such as fence and property lines and roads, which generally run north/south or east/west.
  8. If you're lost near a stream, head downstream.
  9. If you're lost in a corn field, stop and listen for road sounds and then head toward them.

Tips:

  1. The best tip is to pay attention! No daydreaming allowed, particularly if the crops are too high to see over.
  2. Cell phones and two-way radios will inform your friends that you are among the living, but not your location
  3. Even if you're not the boss, be sure to look at the map s/he brought, if not get a copy.
