St. Mary's City was the site of the fourth permanent British settlement in North America, founded in what is now Maryland in the early 16th century. St. Mary's staff conduct archaeological research on many of the 300 archaeological sites associated with St. Mary's City; and the museum contains a living history farm in addition to its collections.
