Graphics Artist

Description: Provides visual images of artifacts, maps of excavations, profiles, plans of site details.
Alternate Titles: Illustrator, Artifact Illustrator
Duties: Prepare detailed 1:1 drawings of artifacts, either pen and ink, photographs, or computer scanned; use a range of software to prepare maps and plans of excavations and survey areas. In recent years, most illustration is done with computer software packages.
Location: Nearly anywhere
Job Type: Generally freelance or part time, but can be a permanent position in larger offices.
Availability of Employment: A few full-time openings at large companies; freelance opportunities are available if you network and use the Internet.
Education Level Required: Once upon a time you needed artistic talent and not much else; today, the job requires facility with a wide range of graphics art software and demands an understanding of perspective and representation. These skills may require advanced education.
