Assists as a consultant on archaeological projects, conducting research into available written records which may exist for a given archaeological site or project.

Alternate Titles:

Archival researcher, historical researcher

Duties:

Research census records and other historical documents, may interview people about their knowledge of the past (called oral history)

Locations:

Universities and cultural resource firms world-wide.

Job Type:

Permanent, if a faculty member in a history department; but generally hired as a specialist for a particular project.

Availability of Employment:

Limited; many archaeologists do their own historical research, but histoircal research on a contract basis may be relatively successful.

Education Level Required:

Advanced degree in history or historical archaeology; occasionally library science as well.
