A comparable iron knife handle was identified as a table knife in two catalogs of the late 19th century: The Montgomery Ward and company catalogue of 1894-1895 and the Simmons Hardware Company catalogue of 1881. The small grommet is of a copper alloy and is typical of one that might be found on a shoe or piece of clothing.
