The Eyjafjallajökull eruption [of March-May 2010] impacted on the very heart of modern (post-) industrial society and disrupted its slick yet fragile order. The culture of mobility was particularly ill-prepared for this unexpected risk event. Measures are already being put in place to ensure that this does not happen again: this new type of risk has been brought into an already diverse risk portfolio, adding yet another strand to the risk society. As Latour (2007: 9) puts it, ‘suddenly under crisis you realize that all along you have been inhabiting the Earth’.
