From an archaeological standpoint, seeing the final phase of construction is an important step: but to fully understand the building methods used by the Maya to make Toucan House, and to get a closer understanding of the residents themselves, the archaeologists must completely dismantle the walls and look at the foundations. That process begins with the removal of the plaster floor.
In this photo, the archaeologists have removed the prepared plaster floor from Toucan House and are troweling beneath it to identify any features which may lie underneath the house itself.
