Archaeological sites are often located off paved roads and in the back country away from modern civilization. Getting to the site might involve driving for quite some time across rough terrain. The residential site being excavated and presented in this photo essay is some distance from the Maya Research Program base camp, along an old logging road.
Field vehicles need to be sturdy and reliable, but travel over unpaved roads a long distance from the nearest automobile garage means the archaeologist needs to be part auto mechanic, as illustrated here by MRP's director, Tom Gudjeran.
