At least some of the equipment used in every archaeological excavation must be brought out to the site each day, and returned to the base camp at the end of the day.
In some cases, an archaeological project may store excavation equipment such as picks, shovels, buckets and trowels on the site or nearby. But mapping equipment, transits, and cameras are brought back to the base camp every night, along with any field records, artifacts and other pieces of information vital to preserving the archaeological data collected each day.
Everyone joins in as pack animal, including the field director.
