The archaeological site of Mayapan is a “must-see” if you are visiting the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico. The archaeological zone is located about 26 miles south of Merida, the capital of Yucatan.

The ancient city covers an area of approximately four square kilometers, and contains more than 4,000 structures. Mayapan is famous for its similarity with Chichén Itzá, and it reached its maximum florescence in the Late Postclassic period, between AD 1250 and 1450, just after the decline of Chichén Itzá. Most of the buildings now visible are from this epoch.

Over the next few pages, a photo gallery will introduce you to the buildings of the main plaza of Mayapan
