The most impressive of the buildings grouped around the central plaza at Mayapan is without a doubt the Castillo de Kukulkan (Kukulkan Castle), also known as Structure Q162. This building is a smaller version of the more famous El Castillo at Chichén Itzá.
Kukulcan Castle is a temple-pyramid composed of nine superimposed platforms that reach a height of 15 meters (nearly 50 feet). The top of the pyramid, where the actual temple stands, is accessible through stairways of about 60 steps located on each side.
