Definition: American paleoethnobotanist Mary Eubanks is located in the biology department at Duke University, where she has conducted some of the most useful studies of corn biology and the origins of agriculture in the Americas. Her investigations of the genetic structure of corn (maize) suggest that corn originated in the highlands of Mexico as a hybrid between teosinte and gama grass. Her most recent work is as a biotech engineer, attempting to create stronger and more nutritious forms of corn and wheat.
