Robert Koldewey [1855-1925]

Definition:

Robert Johann Koldewey is probably known primarily as the excavator of Babylon, although the German-born archaeologist also excavated in Asia Minor, Greece, and Italy.

Koldewey's excavations at Babylon revealed the foundations of the ziggurat Marduk, and the Ishtar Gate; and in the process he developed several modern techniques including a method to identify mud brick architecture.
