Alexander Marshack [1918-2004]

By , About.com Guide

Definition: American independent scholar Alexander Marshack began his professional life as a journalist, but in 1963, a chance introduction to Ice Age art led him into archaeology. Long identified with Harvard University, Marshack is best remembered for his intensive studies on Paleolithic art, including studies of paleolithic notation. Paul Bahn, writing Marshack's obituary in Antiquity (linked in the side bar), commented that his photo journalistic background led Marshack to revolutionize the study of Paleolithic art, in books such as The Roots of Civilization.
