Ernst Wilhelm Middendorf [1830-1908]

By K. Kris Hirst, About.com

Definition: Ernst W. Middendorf (1830-1908) was a medical doctor from Germany who successfully practiced for many years in the South American towns of Arica and Lima (1854-62, 1865-71, 1875-88). Having become interested in Andean culture and languages, he visited extensive parts of Peru and Bolivia in 1885-88, publishing his linguistic studies and travel reports after his return to Germany (1890-95). Middendorf made early drawings and descriptions of the archaeological site of Chavín de Huantar, and was the first to recognize connections between highland Chavín and coastal Peruvian sites.
