Definition: American archaeologist Mildred Mott Wedel was a pioneer of ethnohistorical studies in the American midwest. Trained at the University of Chicago, Mott wrote her dissertation in 1938 on the connection between archaeological manifestations and specific Native American tribes, a work that is still considered a classic of the 'direct historical approach' of the period. After she married Plains archaeologist Waldo Wedel, Mott took an active role in the survey and excavation of archaeological sites throughout the Great Plains.
