Definition: Russian born Tatiana Proskouriakoff was a pioneer archaeologist, who combined her facility in ethnohistory, art, architecture and archaeology to produce a remarkable written documentation of the Maya civilization. Proskouriakoff's formal education was limited to a bachelor's degree in architecture at the Pennsylvania State University, but she was eventually given honorary doctorates at Penn State and Tulane. Her work on Maya hieroglyphs from sites such as Tikal, Chichen Itza, and Piedra Negras provided support for her argument that the steles recorded life events of the Maya rulers.
