By , About.com Guide

Definition: American art historian and epigrapher Linda Schele was first and foremost an artist, but when she saw Palenque in 1970, she turned her remarkable talents towards recording Mesoamerican hieroglyphic renderings, most notably on Maya stele. She published prolifically and toward the end of her life ran workshops on Maya writing in Texas, Guatemala and Belize. Her massive collections of drawings from Maya structures have been made digitally available at the FAMSI website.
