Definition: Don Carlos de Siguenza y Gongora was a Jesuit priest in Mexico City in the late 17th century, and an illustrious scholar of the New World. His main interests were astronomy, mathematics and cosmography, which got him in trouble with the Catholic church, but when he got access to Aztec and Toltec documents and ruins, he got into real trouble. Siguenza was a prolific writer of history, fiction, and scientific tracts including histories of Queretaro and the Chichimecas, and the genealogy of the Mexican kings.
