By , About.com Guide

Definition: Polish-born Ephraim Speiser emigrated to the United States as a teenager; he was an expert on Middle Eastern and Mesopotamian archaeology at the University of Pennsylvania, and was one of only a few scholars of the day that spoke ancient Hittite. His main claim to fame include his 1930s excavations at Tepe Gawra, where he identified the ceramics known as Halaf; and his assistance in the translation of the Torah from the ancient Hebrew into English.
