Definition: American journalist and diplomat Ephraim Squier became interested in the prehistoric American earthworks known as mounds while working as a clerk in the Ohio House of Representatives. He met Edwin Davis of the Smithsonian Institution, and together they spent the late 1840s exploring and mapping the mounds of the Mississippi River basin. Squier remained interested in archaeology, and continued work throughout the 1850s and 1860s as archaeologist and ethnographer in Latin America, as a diplomat for the American government.
