Definition: American historian David Stannard's tremendously influential 1992 book, American Holocaust: Columbus and the Conquest of the New World, highlighted the true cost of the colonization of the American continent by settlers from Europe. Trained at Yale University, Stannard is currently professor in the American Studies department at the University of Hawai'i.
