Definition: American archaeologist Julie K. Stein is probably best known for her active embrace of the modern brand of empirical geological theory as a basic underpinning of archaeology. Stein's 1992 edited volume on stratigraphy in shell middens called Deciphering a Shell Midden is a modern classic; she has also written or co-written numerous articles on geoarchaeology. Stein has conducted specialist investigations on sediments for sites around the world. Trained at the University of Minnesota under George "Rip" Rapp, Stein is currently professor of anthropology and Divisional Dean of Research at the University of Washington.
