John Lloyd Stephens [1805-1852]

Definition: American adventurer and author John Lloyd Stephens led a varied life, occupied as a steamship and railway executive and a lawyer before settling down to travel to the exotic places of the world and write about the people and the cultures he came across.

In 1839, he was sent to Central America as a diplomat, where, accompanied by the artist Frederick Catherwood, he visited the archaeological ruins in Honduras, Guatemala and the Yucatan peninsula.
