Matthew W. Stirling [1896-1975]

Definition: American archaeologist Matthew W. Stirling was associated with the Bureau of American Ethnology at the Smithsonian Institution pretty much his entire professional career. Educated at Berkeley and George Washington, Stirling is perhaps most commonly remembered for his work identifying and excavating Olmec period sites in central America, including excavations at LaVenta and San Lorenzo.
