Stuart Struever [b. 1931]

By , About.com Guide

Definition: American archaeologist Stuart Struever is undoubtedly best known for his investigations at the Koster site, a multiple component site buried deep within the alluvial deposits of the Illinois River in the midwestern United States.

This was an incredibly important day in archaeology. Basically, nobody in the United States went looking for archaeological sites so deeply buried until Struever put the machines to work. Struever also played a role in the burgeoning use of archaeological flotation to recover small artifacts from soil deposits.

Educated at Northwestern and the UC Berkeley, Struever founded and directed the Center for American Archaeology in Kampsville, Illinois; and founded and led the Crow Canyon Campus of the CAA in Cortez, Colorado. He retired in 1992.
