William Stukeley [1687-1765]

Definition: British doctor and clergyman William Stukeley is most frequently associated with Stonehenge, because he was the first to consider the structure as potentially aligned with the solstice. Educated as a medical doctor at Cambridge, Stukeley was the first secretary of the Society of Antiquaries in London, and conducted work at Avebury as well as Stonehenge, and publishing two very well respected works on these sites.
